Jean’s inspiration to become an artist is rooted in a childhood rich with witnessing her elder relatives creating. Paintings of snowshoes, mukluks, and moccasins were her favorite creations in her early career. As a child, Jean loved to draw and favored drawing human figures. Inspired by the rich, colorful regalia of the Northwest Coast Nations, which include her Nation of the Inland Tlingit, It was a natural evolution for Jean to create scenes of dancing figures in brilliant regalia called button blankets and Chilkat blankets. Jean has become well-known for her paintings of these dancers.
